ΣΑΝ ΣΗΜΕΡΑ 28 Ιουλίου 1981, κυκλοφορεί ο ΙΒΜ System/23 Datamaster. Μόλις δύο μήνες πριν την κυκλοφορία του IBM-PC που θα αλλάξει για πάντα την αγορά των προσωπικών υπολογιστών. O System/23 υπήρξε ένας desktop υπολογιστής που αποτελούσε εξέλιξη των προσπαθειών της ΙΒΜ στο χώρο των μικρών all-in-one συστημάτων, η οποία έχει ξεκινήσει ήδη από το 1975 με τον IBM 5100 Portable Computer.
Παρόλο που θεωρητικά τα δύο συστήματα της ΙΒΜ, PC και Datamaster, βρίσκονταν σε παρόμοιο πεδίο χρήσης, η στόχευση των δύο συστημάτων παρουσίαζε σημαντικές διαφοροποιήσεις. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το System/23 αποτελεί πρακτικά απόγονο του, επίσης all-in-one, IBM 5120, του 1980, με πολύ ειδικευμένο ρόλο.
Σε ένα συμπαγές, αν και αρκετά βαρύ, περίβλημα ενσωματώνονταν η κύρια μονάδα, το πληκτρολόγιο, το μόνιτορ και οι δίσκοι.
Ο System/23 ήταν ένα σύστημα, που με το άνοιγμα του διακόπτη ήταν πλήρως έτοιμο για χρήση (ενσωμάτωνε στην ROM τη γλώσσα προγραμματισμού Basic). Προοριζόταν για χρήση από υπάλληλους γραφείου, μικρής επιχείρησης, όχι απαραίτητα ειδικευμένους στους υπολογιστές. Ακόμη πιο συγκεκριμένα, ήταν σχεδιασμένος για επεξεργασία δεδομένων και κειμένου και προσφερόταν ως πακέτο με εκτυπωτή και αντίστοιχο software (Business Management Accounting και Word Processing). Υπήρχε τέλος η δυνατότητα κοινής χρήσης του ίδιου συστήματος από δύο υπαλλήλους, μέσω ενός επιπλέον τερματικού (όπως φαίνεται στη φωτογραφία).
Ο IBM Datamaster, εκτός του ότι υπήρξε ένα πολύ στοχευμένο σύστημα, παράλληλα αποτέλεσε το τελευταίο βήμα στην απόκτηση της κατάλληλης τεχνογνωσίας από την ομάδα της ΙΒΜ, για τον αποτελεσματικό σχεδιασμό ενός πραγματικά προσωπικού υπολογιστή, όπως ο ΙΒΜ-PC, και τη σωστή αξιοποίηση της αρχιτεκτονική x86 της Intel. Μαζί με τους5100, 5110 και 5120, συγκροτεί την ομάδα all-in-one desktop υπολογιστών της ΙΒΜ που οδήγησαν στo σχεδιασμό, αλλά και την επιτυχία του IBM-PC.

The specs of this computer are incorrect.
The DRAM was offered from 32KB to 128KB, in increments of 32KB. While the banking mechanism allows 256KB DRAM, the handshaking mechanisms are only implemented to recognize up to 128KB.
Also, the computer has four expansion slots, not six. The other two are memory board slots, which have different pinout and pincount.

You’re absolutely right — the DRAM was indeed offered from 32KB to 128KB in 32KB increments, and while the banking mechanism technically allows up to 256KB, the handshaking only supports up to 128KB in practice.
